Chapter 10 - Circe

Summary: (Maeve)

In this chapter Odysseus continues to tell his story:
He starts upon their arrival at Aeolus' island, where they stay for a month under Aeolus' hospitality. Then when they leave Aeolus gives Odysseus a bag of winds that will take him to any port of his choice, and he chooses to go home to Ithaca. When they are almost there Odysseus falls asleep and the crew looks in the bag of winds, which blows them all the way back to Aeolus' island. On the island they go into Aeolus' house and he is surprised to see the crew back on his island. He gets mad at Odysseus and refuses to help him. For the next week they sailed, and then landed on Telepylus, the Laestrygonian land. So then three of the crew went to explore the island on command of Odysseus, and they met a little girl. The girl directed them to the house of Antiphates, the Laestrygonian chief. Upon meeting the three men, Antiphates ate two of them and the last ran back to the ship with the news, but was followed by the cannibal people of the land. Only Odysseus' ship and crew escaped these people, and the rest were captured. Next they sailed to the island of Aeaea, the island of Circe. In the morning Odysseus went out to see the island and saw Circe's house but did not go towards it, instead he went back to the ship and split the crew into two teams led by himself and Eurylochus. The team led by Eurylochus went to Circe's house and were turned into pigs, all except for Eurylochus who came back to tell the news. Then Odyssues went to save his friends, but on the way met Hermes, who gave him some moly to make him immune to the magical drugs Circe would give him. Hermes also gave Odysseus a plan for how to get his friends back from Circe. Odysseus used this advice to get his friends and befriend Circe. Then Odysseus asked Circe how to get back to Ithaca and she told him that first he must go to the underworld with Hades and Persephone to consult Teiresias, the blind Theban prophet. He told the crew of this journey and they set off.
